Simon Harford – Senior Advisor
Simon is a Senior Advisor for Riverhouse Partners and helps the firm navigate its advisory and strategic focus particularly across the Impact agenda. He has considerable experience in the space, having been a key part of investments in this area, particularly across Africa for over 15 years, long before the Impact agenda became the current global imperative.
Simon has a long track record operating and advising at Actis, the US$12 billion specialist emerging markets investor where he was formerly co-Head of the Africa private equity business and responsible for value-creation across the investment portfolio spanning 15 African countries. He spent 10 years living on the continent, based in Nigeria and South Africa. Actis was awarded Impact Investor of the Year in 2019.
Simon has long been committed to Impact in his track record of investing and thought leadership for the evolution of responsible investing methods, post-investment value-creation, and corporate governance Board effectiveness. He has advised a number of major organisations on impact investing and on Africa, and various governments on private sector investment and economic development. He also lectures at business schools on business ethics and on emerging market private equity.
Simon also serves as Senior Adviser to The Larry Ellison Foundation, the impact investment office for the founder of Oracle, and on the Investment Committee for Novastar Ventures, a pioneering venture-capital firm backing Sub-Saharan social enterprises. Simon has long served in board and advisory capacities including with the National Empowerment Fund of South Africa; the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business; the African Leadership Group of education social enterprises; the President of Nigeria’s Investment Advisory Council; and numerous corporate boards since 1996.
Simon holds a BA from Oxford University (in Politics, Philosophy and Economics) and an MBA from INSEAD.
